In celebration of March Women’s History Month, Co-op shoppers will find signage throughout the store indicating women-owned businesses. These businesses may be 100% owned by a woman, or they may be part of a partnership or family operation. The latter allows for the often significant involvement of women in agriculture and retail production where, historically, their contributions may not always be recognized. Others include cooperative or employee-owned business models. The 2025 Women’s History Month theme is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”

About Women’s History Month
President Jimmy Carter established the first week of March as “Women’s History Week” in 1980. In 1987, Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 20, designated March as Women’s History Month. This proclamation was signed by President Ronald Reagan on March 16, 1987, whereupon he stated “I call upon all Americans to mark this month with appropriate observances to honor the achievements of American women.”
Nineteen months later, on October 25, 1988, HR5050: Women’s Business Ownership Act of 1988, became law. This legislation was drafted following a series of hearings regarding challenges facing women entrepreneurs. Measures in the ruling included a woman’s right to secure seed funding or financial loans in their own name, without being legally required to have the co-signature of a male relative. This legislation may be accessed here.
The most recent Small Business Administration lending statistics note that $5.1 billion was granted to women-owned businesses in FY2023.
